Ljubljana, the city of dragons
Why is Ljubljana the city of dragons? Many centuries ago, Jason, the hero of Greek mythology, won the Golden Fleece and stole Medea, the daughter of King Aeetes. According to local legends, Jason and his Argonauts fled on a ship to the mouth of the Danube River, and then finally they reached the Ljubljanica River. It was winter, so they decided to camp near the spring of the Ljubljanica river because moving the ship would take a long time, and so they set up camp until spring. They came across a large lake where a swamp monster lived and fed on fish and those humans, who unfortunately were easy prey for this fire-breathing dragon. The Argonauts set up their winter camp when they heard a terrible shrieking, spitting fire and noxious fumes over their wooden houses and saw the shadow of a giant flying beast rise from the waters next to their camp, killing more than half of the army. Jason then set out to kill the dragon, wading through the marsh and finding a large island being the dragon's den. Jason took Medea with him and attacked the dragon, but failed. Jason binds the dragonâs mouth with a heavy chain and closes off its nostrils, stuffing huge rocks. This way the dragon, unable to breathe, explodes, burning under its own fire and coloured sparks, lighting up the black sky for miles around. With the dragonâs death, a city was born. The Greek hero marches across the Adriatic Sea, planning to return to his home, Greece.
Nowadays, as soon as you step off the plane, you will encounter many of the dragons scattered around the city: manhole covers on the city emblem. The most famous dragon sight is the Dragon Bridge, with four large dragon statues on its four pillars and decorated with 16 smaller dragons.
Slovenia is not all about myths and stories. Ljubljana is a very beautiful and quiet city, which combines the baroque style with the modern one. The old center of Ljubljana should be crossed on foot so as not to miss a really charming road.
Ljubljana, a cultural city, is home to many theaters, museums, and galleries and boasts one of the oldest philharmonics in the world.
However, this small country remains less popular with tourists, is very beautiful, extremely clean, and boasts huge mountains, lakes, vast caves, elegant cities, and fast-flowing rivers. To get acquainted with Ljubljana, take a boat ride on the Ljubljanica River, flanked by colonnades and elegant squares, being crossed by a lot of beautiful bridges.

Self-catering holidays offer many benefits to travellers, especially groups of families and friends.
If you choose a self-catering vacation trip, you should have a to-do list such as: for how long you will travel; does the accommodation have all the supplies you need for the kitchen; what you want to eat during your self-catering holiday; supermarkets.
Choosing self-catering accommodation is often more spacious than hotel rooms and a good choice for large groups or families. Self-catering also allows you to buy all of your items for less in local shops, markets, or supermarkets. Travelling in a group with your friends, you can split the costs of everything from accommodation to food, drink, and other holiday essentials. Another important advantage of self-catering accommodation is that when you're travelling with kids, you may not be able to book two annexed rooms in the hotel you chose. In a few words, self-catering is among the most budget-conscious options for accommodation.
A tip for you: While you are looking for an accommodation and contacting the owner, don't mention that you've already booked flights, as they will know you're committed to visiting. But you might ask yourself how much money you will need for your trip to Ljubljana.

A Shopper's Guide
Shopping for food and other necessities in Slovenia is quite affordable. Grocery stores and supermarkets are retail outlets that sell fresh and non-perishable food. In the supermarkets you will find all the basic products to supply your fridge.
Ljubljana is now controlled and served by a network of Mercator, Spar, Lidl, Hofer, and Tus shops. There are grocery shops in all districts of Ljubljana and you will always find a shop within walking distance and a lot of smaller shops. Fresh farm products and animal livestock products are sold at very friendly prices in local markets. The local markets or kiosks sell food, dairy, and meat products directly from the farms with cheap prices and what is the best-food is always fresh. Creating a food list helps you focus on what you want to buy, leaving you less susceptible to impulsive marketing tactics and purchases.
Every time you walk into the supermarket, take a full tour of the fruit, vegetable, lean meat, and dairy sections before making strategic shots down the aisle for things like oatmeal and whole grain biscuits.
Supermarkets are designed as casinos almost without windows flooded with artificial light where time stands still "forcing" guests to navigate a maze of attractive opportunities before reaching essential destinations as staple foodsâproducts, bread, milk, and eggsâplaced behind and along the perimeter of the supermarket to ensure that customers walk the length of the store and thus are exposed to multiple temptations of junk food along the way.
As the list is made from home, all you have to do is head to the nearest supermarket.
The Mercator Group is one of the largest corporate groups in Slovenia and consists of associate companies. You can find small Mercator stores or bigger ones, called Hipermarket Merkator. The centers are designed for convenience, with accessible facilities, dining options like two restaurants and multiple bars, and customer-friendly operating hours: Monday to Saturday, 9:00 AMâ9:00 PM, and Sunday, 9:00 AMâ3:00 PM.
Hofer, the Slovenian counterpart to Aldi, has been a staple in the country's grocery market since its debut in December 2005 with 11 stores. Offering a diverse range of products, Hofer caters to budget-conscious shoppers, including students, without compromising on quality.

The bakery section is particularly notable, featuring freshly baked bread, cakes, and pastries. Highlights include olive bread, nutty loaves, chocolate muffins, and soft, warm pretzelsâall made in-house. Beyond groceries, Hofer also sells organic and specialty items, such as gluten-free and vegan products, seasonal goods, and even non-food items like kitchenware and clothing, often at discounted prices during promotional periods.

Mount Saint Mary, also known as Å marna Gora, is a prominent peak standing at 669 meters high, located to the northwest of Ljubljana, the capital of Slovenia. This mountain is notable for its historical and cultural significance, with the oldest landmark being a plague sign. This sign was erected in honor of the survivors who faced battles against the Ottoman Turks and the devastating impacts of the plague that ravaged the region.
At the summit of Å marna Gora, visitors can find a wishing bell, a unique feature believed to grant the hidden wishes of those who ring it. The top of the mountain also offers small shops where hikers can purchase food and beverages, making it a popular destination for both locals and tourists.
The mountain is steeped in legend, with stories explaining its formation. According to local folklore, a giant once inhabited the area, accompanied by a dog that possessed a dragon-like head. This giant instilled fear in the hearts of the local people. One day, a brave individual devised a clever plan to outsmart the giant and his fearsome companion. He tied a rabbit inside a sack and armed himself with an iron rod before approaching the giant's dwelling.
Upon reaching the giant's location, he released the rabbit, provoking the dog's instinct to chase it. This commotion woke the giant, who, upon sneezing, inadvertently sent the brave man flying across the Sava River. Enraged, the giant began hurling large boulders across the river and subsequently crossed to the opposite bank. He then stacked the rocks into a massive pile and, after completing his work, stepped on top of the mound and plunged into the heart of the mountain. This legendary act is said to have resulted in the formation of both Mount Saint Mary (Å marna Gora) and the nearby Grmada peak.

The Roman Empire left a significant imprint on Ljubljana, evident through its ancient archaeological site known as Emona. This Roman military base, established approximately two thousand years ago, was an essential part of the region's history. Emona was unfortunately destroyed by the Huns in 452 AD, but remnants of its past can still be seen today.
Among these remnants are the ruins of a cemetery, which contains over 50 graves arranged in orderly rows, as well as the remains of the city gates that can still be observed in Ljubljana. The site dates back to the time of emperors Augustus and Tiberius, during which they ordered the construction of substantial public buildings.
The fortress of Emona was extensive, constructed using meticulously carved stone blocks that were bound with mortar and filled with a mix of river pebbles, small rocks, sand, and lime. Within the fortress walls, various structures were established, including a church, a vineyard, grain depots, and residential buildings for Roman citizens.
In contemporary Ljubljana, Zvezda Park serves as a focal point for this historical heritage. Here, visitors can view the remnants of Emona's walls alongside a gilded statue commemorating a citizen of Emona, which further connects the city's past to its present.
