Rome Caput Mundi With a long history, monumentals and artistic wealth, Rome attracts tourists every year from all over the world. With the largest historical center in the world, the “ Eternal City'' has a lot to offer: monuments, churches, squares, fountains, paintings, statues, streets, altars, arenas. Rome is not the first city to be called an "Eternal City" or "City of the Seven Hills" ,which has a millennial value that goes beyond the historical sense. Other locations have been called as well as eternal cities such as Jerusalem, Kyoto , and have been called this way. Eternity and greatness will always remain of Rome but also his other famous name - Roma Caput Mundi, meaning Rome the center of the world. In ancient times the Italian capital was the center of power of an empire, therefore the phrase could make sense in reference to the history of the city. Roma Caput Mundi has been handed down over the centuries, up to the present day. An enclave of Rome is also the Vatican State, a sovereign territory of the Holy See located in a Roman quarter. It is the smallest state in the world, and the capital of the only religion represented in the United Nations. On February 3, 1871, after the Italian army led by General Giuseppe Garibaldi ended papal control over Rome and the Papal State, the millennial city on the banks of the Tiber River was declared the capital of the new Kingdom of Italy. Rome is one of the few large cities in Europe that survived World War II relatively unaffected, the center of Rome remains renaissance and baroque in essence. Rome's Historic Center is on the UNESCO World Heritage List. According to legend, Rome was founded by the twins Romulus and Remus on April 21, 753 BC the two twins raised by the she- wolf , and archaeological evidence supports the theory that Rome developed from pastoral settlements on the Palatine Hill. It is also one of the most loved cities for film sets and its world-famous churches and its romantic cityscapes, it seems that everyone knows Rome. THE LEGEND OF ROME Although the history of Rome and the Roman Empire is generally known to the general public, the origin of the fortress on the banks of the Tiber has long been shrouded in mystery and left to myth and legend. According to legend, Rome was founded by the twins Romulus and Remus on April 21, 753 BC the two twins raised by the she- wolf. This huge empire was the creation of the Romans, an ethnic and racial mix established on the seven hills in the Tiber area. The story of Rome, as it appears in myths, begins more precisely with the siege of Troy. The Trojan hero Aeneas escapes from the hands of the victorious Greeks and goes to sea in search of salvation. He reaches the shores of the Italian Peninsula and here fights the king of Latinum. Finally, Aeneas and Latinum make peace, consecrating the peace into a marriage: Aeneas marries Latinum's daughter, Lavinia. They have a son, Ascanius, who founded the city of Alba Longa. Eventually, Rhea Silvia, Numitor's daughter, gave birth to twin boys. The situation was complicated, Rhea Silvia being the priestess, she had to keep her chastity. But the children's father was of divine origin, the god Mars himself. As no one would have believed the story, the children are abandoned immediately after birth in a basket on the Tiber River. They are saved from death by a she-wolf who is breastfeeding, and is later adopted by a Latin shepherd named Fastulus. Meanwhile, they find their illustrious origins as the descendants of the king of Alba Longa, the Numitor. Meanwhile, their grandfather had been dethroned by his brother Amulius. The twins, named Romulus and Remus, go to avenge their grandfather, and Amulius is killed. They do not want to stay in Alba Longa and want to make a fortress of their own. When it is decided what name to bear the new city, I submit this choice to auspices, namely whoever sees more eagles in the sky, let him give the name of the city. Romulus was the winner, and the new city was named Rome. Romulus swore that he would not let anyone pass through the walls of his city. Jealous, Remus jumps over the furrow drawn by Romulus, as a marker for the walls of the enclosure, and Romulus kills his brother. Many people came to the city, and soon Romulus realized that all who lived in the new city were men, so he decided to steal the women from the neighboring tribe, the Sabines. But this whole story is just a legend. Even the dynasty of kings who would have succeeded Romulus to the throne has been questioned by historians. But there are also specialists who say that Romulus was a real historical figure. Where to accommodate yourself? At the top of the castle you can observe a marble statue depicting an angel who, according to legend, appeared at the top of the fortress in 590 and miraculously ended the plague epidemic that had infested the entire city of Rome. After that, the building was named Castel Sant’Angelo. A secret corridor, known as the Passetto di Borgo, connects Castel Sant’Angelo to the Vatican. The corridor was used by Pope Clement VII and the Swiss Guard to withdraw from Charles de Bourbon's army during the 1527 invasion of Rome. The Imperial Forums in Rome is a 2,000 year old story and represents one of the most famous and at the same time most fascinating archaeological and historical areas in the world. Imperial Fora are a number of squares and monuments built mainly by Roman emperors Julius Caesar, Augustus, Vespasian, Nerva, and Trajan in less than two centuries, in the center of Rome. The forum of Caesar was followed by the forum of Augustus, the forum of the Peace, built by Vespasian, the forum of Nerva, and finally the spectacular forum of Trajan, with the group of Trajan markets. It is located between the Capitol and the Colosseum, with entrances at Via dei Fori Imperiali and Piazza del Colosseo. Forum of Caesar, known as the Forum Iulium or Forum Caesaris, is an impressive complex remains and was the first complex to be built. The Forum of Caesar is in the form of a rectangle measuring 160 by 75 m. A temple dedicated to the Venus Genitrix dominates the far end, dedicated to the goddess that Caesar celebrated as his distant ancestor. "I found Rome a city of bricks and left it a city of marble"- is a quote said by Augustus. The emperor replaced them with colossal marble temples: the Temple of Castor and Pollux, the Temple of Saturn, the Temple of Vesta, the Temple of Venus and Roma, the Temple of Antoninus and Faustina, the Temple of Caesar, the Temple of Vespasian and Titus, and the Temple of Concord. The Forum of Augustus was built for Emperor Augustus together with the temple of Mars Ultor. On the 2nd of June, the parade of festa della Repubblica, the Italian National Day, takes place in Via dei Fori Imperiali street, near the Imperial Forum. The Colosseum is one of the seven wonders of the world, the largest amphitheater in the world, an important symbol of Italy and one of the best known monuments in the world, a symbol of ancient glories and bloody struggles. In this mythical place the Romans went to watch gladiator fights for their lives and where those condemned to death were fed to animals, while today is a favorite tourist destination. was started by the Vespasian Emperor from the Flavia Dynasty in 72 AD and was used for hunting simulations, gladiator fights and sporting events and completed in the year 80 AD. The inaugural celebrations inside the Colosseum lasted 100 days, with games and bloody battles, during which about 2,000 gladiators died and 9,000 ferocious animals. The Colosseum was the most massive structure, with an independent arena with four floors that rises to a height of 45 meters, over 189m long and 156m wide. The interior of the Colosseum included three main parts : the arena, the caves and the podium. With a capacity of perhaps 70 thousand spectators, the arena has a sand-covered wooden floor before each battle; sand was supposed to prevent the gladiators from slipping and absorbing their blood. The most evocative places to admire are certainly the gallery that separates the second from the third level and the basement. Into the underground, the hidden heart of the Amphitheater, once dark, noisy, crowded and terrifying, was the places that ferocious animals kept in cages, gladiators waiting to make their entrance into the arena and those who returned there dying. The underground of the Colosseum and the arena are accessible only with an exclusive guided tour. You can also visit the Colosseum in the evening and for sure you will be mesmerised by its golden spotlights, which illuminate the Colosseum. Largo di Torre Argentina, the place of the assassination taking place for more than 2,000 years. The archaeological site also acts as a stray cat sanctuary, who live around the archaeological ruins and are protected by a city that has always loved and revered them. Once housed the Curia of Pompey, a meeting place within Pompey’s Theatre for Roman Senators, and the place where many were witness to the event which was led conspiracy by his close friends Gaius Cassius Longinus and Marcus Junius Brutus, assassinators stepped forward and stabbed him 23 times Julius Caesar. The Sacred Area in Largo di Torre Argentina in Rome you can admire the remains of four temples, named A, B, C and D. Temple A, is thought to be the Temple of Juturna - a Water Nymph of fountains and wells. Temple B is a circular temple and has six of the original columns as well as its original stairs and altar, built and dedicated in honor to Aedes Fortunae Huiusce Diei, the Temple of the Fortune of This Day. During excavations, a large statue of Fortuna was discovered and is now housed in Capitoline Museums. Temple C is the oldest temple, built and dedicated to Feronia, ancient Italic goddess of fertility and Protector of forests, harvests and grain. Temple D was dedicated to Lares Permarini, the Roman god who protected sailors. Capuchin Crypt,or the Bone Cemetery, officially the Museum and Crypt of the Capuchin Friars, which collects documents, works of art, sacred objects and various relics from all over the world, belong to a Roman Catholic religious order of brothers and priests, inspired by the ideals of St. Francis. The building was built in the Baroque period on commission of Pope Urban VIII, in honor of his brother: Cardinal Barberini. It is not a place suitable for sensitive and easily impressionable people. An apparently writing on the entrance plaque says: " What you are we were; what we are you will be". Beneath the church of Santa Maria della Concezione dei Cappuccini (Our Lady of the Conception of the Capuchins) in Rome is Capuchin Crypt, with six chambers containing nearly 4000 bodies and mummified remains, belonging to the Capuchin Friars. The tibias, femurs and skulls affixed to the walls were collected over a very long period of time, ranging from 1528 to 1870. The Capuchin Crypt is open everyday from 09.00am to 19.00 pm. Inside the Capuchin crypt it is forbidden to touch, take photographs and film , both out of respect for the bodies and to preserve this very delicate setting. Bocca della Verità also called Mascherone by Romans, is a famous enormous marble mask, said to bite the hand of those who lie. The legend was born in the Middle Ages: if you lie, holding your hand in the mouth of the sculpture, it will cut it off! Was created by Virgilio Grammatico, a scholar who lived during the sixth century and an expert in magical arts. There is a legend about this mask saying that a husband didn’t trust his wife and took her to the Mouth of Truth to test her faithfulness. The woman was forced to put her hand in the mouth of the mask and question the stone about her marital infidelity. The woman said: “ I swear that no man has ever hugged and kissed me, except my husband and that crazy young man!” and she escaped the accusation of infidelity and continued dating her lover, devised by an extraordinary stratagem who had made a foul on her husband. The woman and her lover planned to deceive the crowd. Her lover would pretend to be crazy, kissing her in front of everyone, this way anyone would witness the man's madness and she would admit being kissed by both men and the Mouth of Truth could only agree with her and the hand remained intact, the mouth did not close and did not sting, the husband forgave her and the crowd exploding in cheerfulness. The Mouth of Truth is a marble sculpture of 1.80 meters in diameter and weight of over 1,300 kg, that portrays the face of an old, wise, bearded man.The mask can still be visited today and is located near the Basilica of Santa Maria in Cosmedin, with features of a man who for some was representing Jupiter. It attracts visitors who audaciously stick their hand in the mouth. The admission to the Mouth of Truth is FREE. If you're a fan of nature, gardening, flowers, parks, this is a must-see in Rome. Rome's rose garden is absolutely beautiful and even more special because it's only open for a limited time from April 21th to June 19th, when thousands of roses are blooming. During these months, the public can visit the garden every day, free of charge, from 8 am to 7:30 pm with no charge for visiting the gardens. Rome didn’t have this garden but date back in 1931, the American countess Mary Gayley Senni succeeded in securing from the city authorities a site on the Oppian hill near the Colosseum, which contained at that time about 300 plants. The garden was destroyed by world war II, but in 1950 the roses bloomed at the garden’s present site, the former home of the Jewish graveyard which transferred to the cemetery at Campo Verano in 1934. You can have a picnic with your family or friends, bring your own food with you, find a seat and spend hours enjoying the scenery and smell. The garden boasts over 1,000 different species of rose, a number of rare varieties, and some rather peculiar ones too. Rome is the greatest height of its splendor and has become a magnificent open-air museum. The Palatine Hill is now a large open-air museum while the Palatine Museum houses many found from the excavations here and from other ancient Italian sites. Imperial palaces were built here, starting with Augustus. While you visit Italy, you should climb to the top of Palatine Hill and visit Domus Augustana, Domus Flavia, Stadium and Farnese Gardens. A legend says that here at Palatine Hill, in an abandoned cave known as the Lupercal, the twins Romulus and Remus were found by the she-wolf Lupa that kept them alive. The admission ticket required for Palatine hill is the same ticket you use to enter the Colosseum and the Forum. There are legends about the place. Most tours will walk through the Roman Forum, but not all climb up the hill, so you need to purchase the recently released super ticket. The Super ticket is for admission to the Colosseum, Forum and Palatine, but also grants you access to the most important archaeological sites hidden away within these major attractions. And you?
